"An exciting and new program for Adults 55 years of age and older!"
Seniors' Hiking Initiative - Opportunities for both Novice and Experienced Hikers
"Boy, I would love to hike if only…" - If you've ever thought this, then Hike Ontario's Seniors' Hiking Initiative is for YOU!
PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY:
The Seniors' Hiking Initiative is meant to provide the training (Safe Hiker Program course) and build a support system for novice hikers and walkers that would love to hike but are not yet comfortable with hiking or have no one to hike with. This program also has opportunities for experienced hikers (Certified Hike Leader course, "Train the Trainer" course) who want to help others get on the trail and be active by leading hikes or becoming a trainer.
Hike Ontario is looking to partner with Seniors’ Community Centres and Seniors’ groups across Ontario to offer the Seniors' Hiking Initiative in communities throughout the province. Hike Ontario will help foster and support the development of a Seniors' Hiking Initiative.
The Seniors' Hiking Initiative courses (listed below) are a mixture of theory and practical on the trail experience.
- Safe Hiker Program geared to beginners. This foundation course will introduce novice hikers/walkers to the skills needed and the benefits of hiking and walking. The Seniors' Hiking Initiative builds awareness of opportunities in Ontario with special focus placed on safety, planning, sustainability and enjoyment for personal outings. Learn about it HERE.
- A Certified Hike Leader course for those interested in leading hikes and is geared to experienced hikers. For more details, click HERE.
- And finally a “Train the Trainer” program for those interested in teaching either of the above sources. This program is co-taught with established instructors using a mentoring method and offered at many locations throughout Ontario.
- The program, when possible, involves local hiking clubs to help facilitate finding outings and people to hike with.
