The course is designed for individuals wishing to apply basic land navigation skills for outdoor activities by using a map and compass. All interested hikers are welcome to register.

Objectives

  1. Develop the skills and knowledge of how to use a map and compass to navigate and orient yourself in the outdoors.
  2. Prepare successful course participants for additional hiking courses including Navigation: GPS.

Content

The course will help participants to understand and to use a map and compass in basic navigation situations. Course components include a section on parts of a map and compass, reading a map, taking a bearing on a map and taking a bearing in the field with a compass.

Format

The theory portions will be held indoors and the practical half of the course will be conducted outdoors.

Participant Expectations During the Course:

  • Understand basic map-reading skills.
  • Participate in the indoor and outdoor practical activities.

Pre-Course Assignment: None

Course Length: Full Day (9:00 am-5:00 pm)

Assessment: This is a practical course requiring full participation.

Location: As appropriate to Hike Ontario or the hosting club or organization.

Required Text: None

Resources Required by Participants: Participants need to bring a base plate orienteering compass, paper, pen, ruler, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, lunch, and water.
